Capable of 575mph and with a range of 1,300
miles, this jet had quite a thirst for fuel. As there was
insufficient space within the wings and fuselage for the amount
of fuel required, permanently-mounted wingtip fuel tanks were
added which had the side benefit of improving the fighter's rate
of roll! The jet was retired by the US in the late fifties to
early sixties, but was still in service with the Argentinean
Navy (the only foreign buyer of the Panther) until 1969.
